SLATER, Mo. - Schuyler County traded leads with Slater through much of the first half Friday night, but a late surge before halftime and a scoreless second half for the Rams brought their season to a close. The Wildcats scored 69 unanswered points after Schuyler County took a second-quarter lead, handing the Rams an 83–20 loss in the opening round of the 8-Man District 8 playoffs.
The fifth-seeded Rams finished the season 3–6, while fourth-seeded Slater improved to 5–5 and advanced to face top-seeded North Shelby in the district semifinals. Schuyler County led 20–14 midway through the second quarter before the Wildcats scored three touchdowns before halftime, building a 34–20 advantage they extended throughout the second half.
An early defensive takeaway helped Schuyler County get started. Freshman Drake Macomber intercepted a pass on Slater’s opening possession, and the Rams capitalized when Gage Pauley found Mason Oliver behind the defense for a 41-yard touchdown. Slater answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by Quincee Perry and a successful two-point conversion, but Milo Sevits’ 2-yard scoring run put Schuyler County back in front, 12–8, entering the second quarter.
The teams exchanged touchdowns again as Slater quarterback Payton Zdybel broke loose for a 47-yard scoring run before Pauley answered with a 5-yard touchdown run. Pauley then connected with Cash Cunningham for the two-point conversion, giving the Rams a 20–14 lead with 6:19 remaining in the half.
Slater’s response shifted control of the game. Carter Duncan caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Zdybel to tie the score, then followed a long punt return with a 24-yard touchdown run that put the Wildcats ahead for good. Schuyler County appeared to have stopped another Slater possession on fourth down late in the half, but a face mask penalty extended the drive. Duncan finished that opportunity with a 7-yard touchdown run, leaving the Rams facing a two-score deficit at the break.
With Slater also receiving the second-half kickoff, Schuyler County needed an early stop to keep the game within reach. Instead, Zdybel scored on runs of 3 and 7 yards, and Duncan added a 1-yard touchdown run as the Wildcats pulled away. Slater also recovered a botched punt snap in the end zone, taking a 63–20 lead into the fourth quarter while its defense kept the Rams from finding an offensive rhythm.
Pauley finished with 148 passing yards and a touchdown on seven completions in 16 attempts, along with his rushing touchdown. Oliver led the Rams’ receivers with three catches for 86 yards and a score, while Rylan Cook caught two passes for 46 yards. Cunningham added two receptions for 16 yards and completed a 6-yard pass to Pauley.
Macomber paced Schuyler County on the ground with 32 yards on nine carries. Dominic Toledano added 19 yards on eight attempts, and Sevits finished with 15 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. The Rams totaled 216 yards of offense, including 154 through the air, but were unable to add to their scoring after the second-quarter touchdown.
Duncan led Slater with 151 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries, along with his touchdown reception and a second-half interception. Zdybel added 125 rushing yards and three scores while throwing for 53 yards and a touchdown. Carter Brumit scored twice in the fourth quarter, and Perry added a 45-yard touchdown run to finish with 53 rushing yards and two scores. The Wildcats accumulated 409 yards of offense, including 356 on the ground.
The season finale marked the final football game for Schuyler County seniors Noah Brown, Danny Priebe and Anthony Zelaya. The Rams will return several of their offensive contributors next season, including juniors Pauley and Oliver, while Slater continues postseason play at North Shelby on Friday, Nov. 6.
