Monroe City's Ground Game Proves Too Much for Indians

MONROE CITY, Mo. - Clark County’s late-season momentum came to an end Friday night at Lankford Field, where Monroe City defeated the Indians 44–8 in the Class 2 District 7 quarterfinals. The Indians entered postseason play following consecutive victories over Highland and Scotland County, but could not slow a Panthers rushing attack led by Blaze Cobble and Wes DeGrave.

Clark County had an early opportunity to take the lead after Grady Webster recovered Monroe City’s opening onside kick near midfield. The Indians advanced into the red zone before turning the ball over on downs at the Panthers’ 16-yard line. Monroe City capitalized on the stop, with Cobble breaking a 76-yard run to set up DeGrave’s 3-yard touchdown. Tymere White added the two-point conversion, giving the Panthers an 8–0 first-quarter lead.

Monroe City extended its advantage through the air in the second quarter. Wyatt DeGrave connected with Collin Potterfield for a 13-yard touchdown, followed by Potterfield’s two-point conversion, before finding White for a 9-yard score to make it 22–0. Clark County answered late in the half, putting together a scoring drive capped by Bennett Plenge’s 1-yard touchdown run. Plenge then found Lukas Weaver for the two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 22–8 with 1:44 remaining.

The Indians were unable to carry that momentum into halftime, however, as Monroe City answered with another scoring possession. Wes DeGrave reached the end zone on a 28-yard run with 27 seconds left, and Cobble added the conversion to send the Panthers into the break ahead 30–8.

Monroe City controlled the opening possession of the second half, using nearly five minutes before Julian Moss finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Clark County threatened to respond when Plenge connected with Weaver for an apparent touchdown, but a holding penalty erased the play. The Indians eventually turned the ball over on downs, and Wes DeGrave added his third rushing touchdown on a 13-yard run late in the quarter. Cobble’s conversion made it 44–8, and neither team scored in the fourth.

Plenge finished his final game for the Indians with 127 passing yards, completing 11 of 20 attempts with one interception while accounting for Clark County’s lone touchdown. Reid Sammons led the Indians with five receptions for 62 yards and added 30 yards on three rushing attempts. Weaver caught two passes for 40 yards, while Landon Roberts contributed 16 rushing yards and two receptions for 15 yards. Webster added 12 yards on three carries.

Cobble paced Monroe City with 205 yards on 15 carries, while Wes DeGrave rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on 12 attempts. DeGrave also caught two passes for 49 yards and intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter. Wyatt DeGrave completed seven of nine passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers finished with more than 400 yards on the ground.

The loss closes Clark County’s season and the high school football careers of a senior group that helped the Indians finish the regular season with back-to-back road victories. Monroe City advances to face Centralia in the district semifinals.
