BROOKFIELD, Mo. - Putnam County continued to battle against unbeaten Marceline on Saturday afternoon, getting a double-digit strikeout performance from Rory Gilworth and putting together a late bases-loaded opportunity, but the Lady Midgets could not push a run across against Emerald Bloss. The top-ranked Lady Tigers earned an 8-0 victory at Brookfield High School in the Class 2 District 6 semifinals, ending Putnam County’s season at 13-14.
Bloss delivered a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks, while also providing a home run, a double and three RBIs. Marceline improved to 24-0 and advanced to face South Harrison in Monday’s district championship game.
The two junior pitchers opened the afternoon by retiring their opposing lineups in order. Gilworth struck out Hadley Dorrell and Katey Kussman before getting a groundout to finish the first, matching Bloss’ scoreless opening frame. Bloss then struck out the side in the second, keeping both teams without a baserunner through the first inning and a half.
Marceline broke through when Bloss led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run over the left-center field fence. Ella Moseley followed with a double to left on a ball that was difficult to track in the afternoon sun, then came around to score when Sophie Lockwood reached on a throwing error. A walk to Logan Rainey extended the inning, and Dorrell delivered an RBI single to give the Lady Tigers a 3-0 advantage.
Gilworth kept that margin intact through the next two innings, giving Putnam County time to find an opening at the plate. She retired Marceline in order in the third, including a strikeout of Bloss, and worked around a walk and a stolen base in the fourth. The Lady Tigers left a runner in scoring position as Gilworth closed that inning with another strikeout.
Putnam County’s first offensive breakthrough came in the fifth, when Bryna Hurley sent a single up the middle to end Bloss’ perfect start. Bloss had retired the first 12 batters she faced, but Hurley’s leadoff hit gave the Lady Midgets a baserunner with the middle of the order coming up. Bloss answered with three consecutive strikeouts, leaving Hurley aboard and protecting the three-run lead.
Marceline added to its advantage in the bottom half. Dorrell worked a leadoff walk, and Gentry Burns drove her home with a double. The Lady Tigers added two more runs during the inning, including an RBI infield single by Whitney Pennington, to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Even with the larger deficit, Putnam County put together its best scoring opportunity in the sixth. With two outs and nobody aboard, Reagan Smith reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Bela Lopez followed with a single, and Gilworth added another to load the bases for Hurley. The junior made contact again, but her fly ball to center was caught, allowing Bloss to escape the threat without surrendering a run.
Bloss then supplied Marceline’s final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a Dorrell single and a walk to Burns, she drove a double into the outfield to bring both runners home. Putnam County added one more hit in the seventh when Graycie Tennill singled with one out, but Bloss retired the next two batters to finish the shutout.
Gilworth went the distance for the Lady Midgets, striking out 10 over six innings while allowing eight hits and four walks. Only four of Marceline’s eight runs were earned. She continued to work through the Lady Tigers’ lineup and finished with double-digit strikeouts against an offense that collected four extra-base hits.
Hurley, Lopez, Gilworth and Tennill each finished 1-for-3, accounting for Putnam County’s four hits. Dorrell went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored for Marceline, while Burns doubled, drove in a run and scored twice. Bloss finished 2-for-4 with her home run and double.
The loss closed the high school softball careers of Putnam County seniors Reagan Smith, Bela Lopez, Riley Jones, Mira Vice and Charli Ingersoll. The Lady Midgets reached the semifinal round after defeating Trenton in their district opener before facing the unbeaten Lady Tigers.
