North Shelby Shuts Out Scotland County to Advance to District Championship

Category: Local Sports

LA PLATA, Mo. - Clara Uhlmeyer threw a one-hit shutout, Taylin Prange hit a two-run home run, and North Shelby collected 13 hits Saturday afternoon in an 11-0 victory over Scotland County in the Class 1, District 5 semifinals at the La Plata Sports Complex. The top-seeded Lady Raiders broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third inning before adding eight in the fourth to secure the five-inning win.

North Shelby improved to 24-3 behind a lineup that received three-hit performances from Uhlmeyer, Ada Jones and Kinsley Hinshaw. Scotland County finished its season at 10-15 after keeping the Lady Raiders off the scoreboard through the opening two innings.

MaKenna Musgrove worked around a first-inning single by Uhlmeyer and a two-out single by Jones in the second to keep the game even. The Lady Tigers also made an important defensive play in the first, cutting down a North Shelby runner trying to advance to second while another runner remained at third.

Uhlmeyer gave Scotland County little opportunity to gain an early advantage. Coming off her 500th career strikeout in Thursday’s quarterfinal win over Brashear, the junior struck out the first nine batters she faced, including retiring the side on nine pitches in the third inning.

North Shelby broke through in the bottom of the third, starting with Hinshaw’s bunt single down the third-base line. Hinshaw stole second and came home on Sadie Gander’s single to center for the game’s first run. Uhlmeyer followed with a bunt single, putting the Lady Raiders in position to add to the lead.

Lauryn Thrasher brought Gander home with a groundout to second, and Alexis Browning followed with a drive over the right fielder’s head for an RBI triple. Sophia Luckett, courtesy running for Uhlmeyer, scored on the hit to give North Shelby a 3-0 advantage.

Scotland County put together its best scoring opportunity in the fourth. Allie Elenbaas led off with a single past third base, and Lexi Weber moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Uhlmeyer kept the Lady Tigers off the board, however, retiring Elle Hamlin and Maty Buford to leave Elenbaas stranded in scoring position.

The Lady Raiders took control in the bottom half, sending 13 batters to the plate. Jones opened the inning with a single, and courtesy runner Jessa Daniel stole second before Prange drove a two-run home run over the left-center field fence. The blast pushed North Shelby’s lead to 5-0 and started a stretch of eight runs before Scotland County could get out of the inning.

Hinshaw followed with a double and scored when Gander reached on a throwing error. Uhlmeyer then singled home Gander to make it 7-0, and Luckett entered to run before scoring on the throw to first following a dropped third strike.

Thrasher kept the inning moving with a single to center, and Emmalou Rife reached on a fielder’s choice that left both runners safe. Jones delivered a two-out RBI single to right to bring Thrasher home, and Rife and Daniel scored when a throw to first following another dropped third strike got away. Hinshaw added her second double of the inning before Elenbaas entered in relief and recorded the final out.

For Jones, the afternoon marked her first appearance in the starting batting lineup in almost a month, and the sophomore made the opportunity count with a 3-for-3 performance and an RBI. Her three singles included the hit that started the fourth-inning rally and the two-out hit that helped extend it, adding another productive bat to an already deep lineup. That offensive contribution complemented the defensive presence she brings behind the plate, where she handled Uhlmeyer’s one-hit shutout and helped North Shelby control the game on both sides of the ball. Daniel courtesy ran after all three of Jones’s hits, finishing with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Hinshaw also went 3-for-3, collecting two doubles, scoring twice and stealing a base from the ninth spot in the order. Prange drove in two runs with her home run, while Gander, Thrasher and Browning each finished with a hit and an RBI.

Uhlmeyer closed out the victory in the fifth and finished with 13 strikeouts without issuing a walk. She threw 48 of her 63 pitches for strikes and faced just 16 batters, with North Shelby playing error-free defense behind her. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run.

Musgrove worked 3? innings for Scotland County, striking out two without allowing a walk. Elenbaas supplied the Lady Tigers’ lone hit and pitched the final third of an inning in a game that marked the final high school softball appearance for seniors Elenbaas, Buford and Kenzington Miller.

North Shelby advances to the Class 1, District 5 championship game Tuesday, October 20, at 6 p.m. at the La Plata Sports Complex. The Lady Raiders will face the winner of the semifinal between Schuyler County and Canton.
