Bowen's Six Touchdowns Lead No. 1 North Shelby Past Knox County

Category: Local Sports

EDINA, Mo. - Gannon Bowen rushed for six touchdowns as North Shelby, ranked No. 1 in Missouri 8-man football, defeated Knox County 72-22 on Friday night at Ella Campbell Field. The Raiders established control with three first-quarter touchdowns and carried a 53-6 lead into halftime, improving to 7-0 against an Eagles team that was receiving votes in the state rankings entering the week.

The evening began with a moment that brought the rival programs together. Before the official start of the game, Knox County senior Bryant Western participated in a ceremonial touchdown with support from both teams. Western, who suffered serious injuries in an accident several years ago, was celebrated alongside his classmates on a night that also included Senior Night recognition and Pink Out festivities.

Once the game began, North Shelby quickly established the physical style that has helped carry the Raiders to the top of Missouri’s 8-man rankings. Their offensive line opened running lanes for multiple ball carriers, while their defensive front applied pressure and limited Knox County’s opportunities on the ground.

Bowen scored the first touchdown and ran in the two-point conversion to give North Shelby an 8-0 advantage. Drake Prange followed with a 17-yard touchdown run midway through the opening quarter, then broke loose for a 57-yard score with 21 seconds remaining. Successful two-point conversions after both touchdowns pushed the Raiders’ lead to 24-0.

“I just think our, our O-line and D-lines kind of set the tone,” North Shelby coach Kent O’Laughlin said. “Both sides of the ball were playing physical.”

Knox County had moments of success defensively, including a fumble recovery near its own goal line that prevented another North Shelby score. The Eagles also found opportunities through the air, with senior quarterback Carrsen Hayes moving the offense against the Raiders’ defense. Finishing those possessions, however, proved difficult against the state’s No. 1 team.

One of Knox County’s most promising drives reached the North Shelby 2-yard line early in the second quarter. The Raiders held on fourth down, preserving their shutout and taking possession deep in their own territory. North Shelby then drove the length of the field, with Bowen breaking tackles on a long gain before finishing the possession with an 11-yard touchdown run.

Bowen added a 16-yard touchdown on the Raiders’ next possession after a disrupted Knox County punt attempt gave North Shelby a short field. The two scores extended the lead to 39-0, but the Eagles continued working through the passing game and put together a scoring response before halftime.

Hayes connected with Blayce Howerton for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 1:31 remaining in the second quarter. North Shelby answered immediately, as Bowen followed his blockers through an opening and raced 68 yards for a touchdown on the next offensive play. He added another rushing score from 4 yards out with four seconds left, giving him five touchdowns before halftime and sending the Raiders into the break ahead 53-6.

Hayes finished with an unofficial 154 passing yards, completing 17 of 27 attempts. Knox County coach Bruce Vannoy credited the senior quarterback for providing the Eagles’ first-half offensive production. Vannoy said Hayes did not finish the second half because of an injury the coaching staff chose not to take a chance on.

“When we were able to move the ball first half, it was him throwing the ball,” Vannoy said.

North Shelby’s defense complemented its rushing attack by delivering key stops and keeping Knox County from consistently turning completions into scoring possessions. O’Laughlin said the Eagles’ speed and passing ability were points of emphasis entering the matchup, and he credited his defense for containing those threats and making important fourth-down stops.

The Raiders continued their scoring early in the third quarter, with Bowen reaching the end zone from a yard out for his sixth rushing touchdown. That pushed North Shelby’s advantage to 60-6 as the top-ranked team continued controlling the game with a running clock in effect.

Prange finished with an unofficial 119 rushing yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, while Lane Pollard added 74 yards on the ground. Bowen’s six rushing touchdowns highlighted a night in which several Raiders contributed, but O’Laughlin emphasized that the production began with the blocking in front of them.

“I thought all of our backs ran the ball hard,” O’Laughlin said, “but I think they would be the first to say that they had some nice holes to run through.”

Both teams worked younger players into the second half, providing a look at players who will help shape the programs in the coming seasons. North Shelby freshman Griffin Gaines scored on a 4-yard run late in the third quarter, then added a 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Knox County’s younger players supplied two explosive scores of their own. Freshman Aiden Shahan reached the end zone on a 34-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and fellow freshman Jackson Ausmus broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown with just over a minute remaining. Those plays helped the Eagles finish with 22 points after North Shelby had limited them to one first-half touchdown.

Vannoy pointed to defensive alignment mistakes and missed tackles as areas Knox County must improve, while acknowledging the difficulty of bringing down North Shelby’s runners. The Eagles entered the week receiving votes in the Missouri 8-man rankings, and their coach said the challenge now is to take lessons from the matchup and apply them during the remaining weeks of the season.

“We can’t play that way, and we’re gonna have to improve on it,” Vannoy said, “and hopefully we take something from the loss and try to figure it out.”

On a night that recognized Knox County’s seniors, Vannoy also praised the example those players have set within the program. He credited their familiarity with the coaching staff’s expectations and their ability to provide leadership on the field, qualities the Eagles will continue to rely on as they move forward.

For North Shelby, the victory continued an unbeaten season and demonstrated the combination of strength up front, explosive runners and defensive stops that has helped earn the Raiders their No. 1 ranking. O’Laughlin said his players approach each week with a goal in mind and a willingness to work, while stressing that a strong start does not remove the need to keep improving.

“They just show up and try to work each week to get better,” O’Laughlin said.
