SHELBYVILLE, Mo. - North Shelby turned its Senior Night celebration into a showcase of the depth, defensive pressure and explosive playmaking that have carried the Raiders through an unbeaten start to the season. With senior Gannon Bowen contributing to six touchdowns and the defense and special teams repeatedly creating scoring opportunities, North Shelby defeated Schuyler County 97-0 Friday night in a Central River North Conference and district matchup.
The Raiders, ranked No. 1 in the state’s eight-man media poll entering the contest, improved to 6-0. Schuyler County fell to 2-4. The evening also served as North Shelby’s Pink-Out Night for breast cancer awareness, with players wearing pink accessories alongside their red uniforms.
The final score told only part of the story. North Shelby finished with an unofficial 245 yards of total offense on just 27 offensive plays, benefiting from seven takeaways and two blocked punts. Three touchdowns came on returns, while several other possessions began with the Raiders already within striking distance of the end zone.
Bowen set the tone with two rushing touchdowns, three touchdown passes and a fumble return for another score. Freshman Griffin Gaines added three rushing touchdowns, Lane Pollard scored on both a rushing play and a kickoff return, and Hyatt Copenhaver intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown.
Schuyler County’s defense initially delivered the stop it needed. After North Shelby forced a three-and-out on the Rams’ opening possession, Schuyler County answered by holding the Raiders to a short run and two incomplete passes, forcing North Shelby to punt.
The ensuing special teams play changed the direction of the game. The Rams could not secure the punt, and Gavric Bowen recovered the loose football deep in Schuyler County territory. Clinton Greathouse broke into the backfield to stop Pollard for a loss on the next play, but Gannon Bowen followed with a seven-yard touchdown run. Bowen also carried in the two-point conversion, giving North Shelby an 8-0 lead with 8:43 remaining in the first quarter.
The Raiders’ special teams created another short field on Schuyler County’s next possession, blocking a punt and giving the offense the ball at the Rams’ 24-yard line. Following an incomplete pass, Bowen kept the football and followed a strong lead block from Pollard for a 24-yard touchdown. Another Bowen conversion run extended the advantage to 16-0 with 6:15 left in the quarter.
Schuyler County found occasional openings through the air, including completions from Gage Pauley to Mason Oliver and Rylan Cook, but struggled to sustain that progress. Low snaps disrupted the timing of several plays, and penalties erased opportunities to build momentum against a North Shelby defense that consistently reached the backfield.
One of those disrupted exchanges produced the Raiders’ third touchdown. Bowen scooped up a loose football following an unsuccessful handoff and returned it 28 yards for a score with 3:38 remaining in the opening quarter. Drake Prange caught the conversion pass to make it 24-0.
North Shelby added another touchdown on an untimed down at the end of the quarter, following a penalty that had wiped out a scoring run. Bowen flipped a forward pass to Prange, who took it 21 yards to the end zone. Colton Gander caught the two-point conversion, sending the Raiders into the second quarter ahead 32-0.
Gander became the featured target early in the second period. With Schuyler County applying pressure, Bowen managed to release a screen pass while falling backward, and Gander secured the low throw before turning upfield for a 23-yard touchdown. The pair connected again on the conversion, pushing the lead to 40-0 with 9:44 remaining before halftime.
Just 16 seconds later, North Shelby was back in the end zone. Caleb Barrick recovered a Schuyler County fumble at the Rams’ 19-yard line, and Bowen immediately found Gander for another touchdown. Gander shed a tackle on his way to the goal line, giving him two touchdown receptions in rapid succession. Schuyler County blocked the extra-point attempt, leaving the score at 46-0.
Bowen had now contributed to each of North Shelby’s first six touchdowns, making his mark as a runner, passer and defender during his Senior Night appearance.
The Raiders began rotating additional players into the offense before halftime, and the production continued. A second blocked punt set up Pollard’s 14-yard touchdown run with 5:16 remaining in the half. Gavric Bowen’s extra point made it 53-0.
Schuyler County put together another promising possession late in the half, with Cook making catches in traffic and helping the Rams convert a fourth down. The drive reached near midfield before senior Gage Daniel intercepted a pass, giving North Shelby one more scoring opportunity.
Drayk Plunkett guided the ensuing possession, with Griffin Gaines supplying productive runs and Ty Bacon catching a 16-yard pass to move the Raiders close to the goal line. Gaines finished the drive with a touchdown as the half expired, and Gavric Bowen added the extra point for a 60-0 halftime lead.
North Shelby needed only 13 seconds to add to that margin after the break. Pollard fielded the second-half kickoff at his own eight-yard line, accelerated through the coverage and cut past the final pursuit for a 72-yard touchdown return. Gavric Bowen’s kick increased the lead to 67-0.
Copenhaver then supplied the next two takeaways. He returned his first interception 40 yards for a touchdown, making it 73-0, and intercepted another pass on Schuyler County’s following possession. Both interceptions came against Brody Martin, who had entered at quarterback for the Rams.
The second interception gave North Shelby another short field. Griffin Gaines finished that opportunity with a five-yard touchdown run, and Gavric Bowen carried in the two-point conversion to make it 81-0 with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter.
With a running clock in effect throughout the second half, both teams gave younger players opportunities. Schuyler County assembled its most sustained drive across the third and fourth quarters, using Drake Macomber, Milo Sevits and Cook in a variety of rushing roles.
Macomber supplied runs of nine and five yards, while Sevits helped move the chains with determined efforts in short-yardage situations. Cook added gains on the ground as the Rams crossed midfield and entered North Shelby territory for the first time.
The Raiders preserved the shutout, however. Facing fourth down, Cook had to gather a low snap, and David Miller broke through for a sack to end the possession.
Griffin Gaines later scored his third rushing touchdown and added the conversion run for an 89-0 advantage. Miller then recovered a loose kickoff, accounting for North Shelby’s seventh takeaway and giving the Raiders another possession deep in Rams territory.
Jagger Gaines helped move the ball toward the goal line before freshman Oz Bacon kept it for a one-yard touchdown. Bacon also ran in the two-point conversion to complete the scoring.
As the game wound down, North Shelby used much of the play clock between snaps while its younger players continued to compete. The Raiders’ reserves maintained the offensive production, with Griffin Gaines and Oz Bacon combining for four rushing touchdowns.
Unofficially, Gannon Bowen completed four of seven passes for 87 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing three times for 34 yards and two scores. His fumble return gave him six combined rushing, passing and defensive touchdowns. He was named the Hawkins Harrison Insurnace Player of the Week for the second consecutive week on the Beck's Hybrids Scoreboard Show.
Gander finished with three receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Prange caught one pass for a 21-yard touchdown, and Ty Bacon added a 16-yard reception. Plunkett completed one of two passes for 16 yards.
Griffin Gaines led North Shelby’s rushing attack with 66 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries. Jagger Gaines added 25 yards on three attempts, while Pollard finished with 13 rushing yards and a touchdown on three carries to go with his kickoff return score. The Raiders totaled 103 passing yards and 142 rushing yards.
Copenhaver’s two interceptions led a takeaway effort that also included an interception by Daniel and fumble recoveries by Gannon Bowen, Gavric Bowen, Barrick and Miller. The Raiders turned their defensive pressure and special teams opportunities into points throughout the evening.
For Schuyler County, Pauley completed six of 14 passes for 48 yards. Oliver caught three passes for 22 yards, and Cook had three receptions for 26 yards. Macomber gained 14 yards on two carries, Antonio Wysocki rushed six times for 12 yards, and Cook added six yards on five attempts. Sevits and Dominic Toledano each finished with two rushing yards.
Pauley’s rushing total was reduced by several losses on plays disrupted by low snaps and backfield pressure. The Rams finished with an unofficial 16 rushing yards and 64 yards of total offense.
Despite the deficit, Schuyler County continued working to move the football, particularly during its extended second-half possession. The younger Rams produced several first downs and fourth-down conversions, providing positive moments to carry into the final stretch of the regular season.
North Shelby now turns its attention to a trip to Knox County next Friday, a major test for the unbeaten Raiders. Schuyler County returns home for its own Senior Night next Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. against Braymer.
