UNIONVILLE, Mo. - Putnam County turned a competitive first half into a Homecoming celebration Friday night, scoring 28 unanswered points after halftime to pull away from Marceline for a 42-6 Grand Rivers Conference victory at Dave Mitchell Field.
The win moved the Midgets to 3-2 overall and kept them unbeaten at 3-0 in conference play. Marceline fell to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the GRC.
Putnam County established control at the line of scrimmage early despite rain falling throughout the first half. Sawyer Morgan opened the scoring with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter, keeping the ball on an option play and fighting through contact for a 27-yard touchdown.
The Midget defense quickly created another opportunity. Corbin Campbell-Johnson recovered a Marceline fumble, and Charley Dickerson capitalized with a 13-yard touchdown run. Homecoming King Matthew Blanchard converted both extra points to give Putnam County a 14-0 advantage.
Marceline kept the game within reach through the remainder of the first half. The Tigers struggled to establish their rushing attack against Putnam County’s defensive front, but quarterback Ty Gulley and the passing game helped keep Marceline moving.
The Tigers finally broke through with 33 seconds left before halftime. Gulley threw a backward pass to Weston Molloy, who found Gaven Schreiner in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown on the trick play. Putnam County broke up the ensuing conversion attempt, sending the Midgets into halftime with a 14-6 lead.
The Homecoming festivities included the recognition of Putnam County’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class. Blanchard and Bela Lopez had also been crowned Putnam County’s 2026 Homecoming King and Queen earlier in the day.
After managing 93 yards of offense in the first half, Putnam County opened its playbook and took control in the third quarter. Morgan completed consecutive passes to Rayden Chapman and Dickerson during the opening possession before connecting with Seth Hannink for a five-yard touchdown. Blanchard’s third extra point extended the lead to 21-6.
Campbell-Johnson then made his presence felt on both sides of the football. The junior intercepted Gulley deep in Marceline territory and later scored on a 10-yard run, pushing the advantage to 28-6 with 6:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Putnam County added another touchdown before the quarter ended. Campbell-Johnson bobbled Morgan’s pitch on an option play but maintained his concentration, secured the football and powered across the goal line from 12 yards out. The score completed a 21-point third quarter and sent the Midgets into the final period holding a commanding 35-6 lead.
Hannink supplied the final touchdown with a 16-yard run midway through the fourth quarter. Blanchard completed a perfect night by sending his sixth extra-point attempt through the uprights, finishing 6-for-6 in the rainy Homecoming conditions.
Putnam County head coach Adam Huse credited his offensive front for helping the Midgets take a considerable step forward after scoring only 15 points against South Harrison one week earlier.
“We really, really challenged our O-line this week, and they responded and did some really good things tonight,” Huse said during the Beck’s Hybrids Scoreboard Show. “We’re going to keep challenging those guys and look at the film to see what we struggled with, just continuing to work on those one or two small things each and every practice to get better.”
Putnam County finished with 325 yards of total offense, including 246 on the ground. Campbell-Johnson led the rushing attack with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. He also contributed a fumble recovery and an interception defensively.
Huse selected Campbell-Johnson as Putnam County’s nominee for the Hawkins-Harrison Insurance Player of the Week, calling him “definitely the guy tonight for us.”
Morgan completed eight of his 10 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown while adding 31 yards and another score on the ground. Hannink finished with 32 rushing yards and a touchdown in addition to his five-yard touchdown reception. Dickerson contributed 31 yards and a score on six carries.
“We want to have all three running backs hitting and running really well,” Huse said. “Tonight, we were even able to get the quarterback involved. We’ve got to get some of our other guys stepping up, and tonight we had those guys step up.”
The Midget defense limited Marceline to 40 rushing yards on 32 attempts. Dickerson led Putnam County with 10 tackles and a sack, Corey Chapman recorded eight tackles, and Braxton Wood added seven. Matthew McMillen and Jacob Jones each finished with six tackles, while Degen Wood also recorded a sack.
Rayden Chapman intercepted Gulley during the fourth quarter as the Midgets finished with three takeaways and kept Marceline off the scoreboard throughout the second half.
Dane Phillips led the Tigers on the ground with 53 yards on 15 carries. Molloy completed his only pass for the touchdown and led Marceline with 37 receiving yards. Jagger Sportsman paced the Tiger defense with six tackles.
Huse described his team’s performance with three words: “Energetic, aggressive and physical.” Even after a 36-point victory, however, he believes the Midgets still have room to grow.
“We’re playing better. We’ve still got a ways to go,” Huse said. “It’s hard to say when you score 42 points, but we’re still not playing at the level that I know we can play at. Our kids are continuing to show up and get better. We’re improving each and every week, and that’s all you can ask for.”
The rain did little to dampen the Homecoming atmosphere, with Huse noting that Putnam County supporters remained packed into the stadium and stood three deep along portions of the fence.
“It was amazing,” Huse said. “It rained the entire first half and a little bit of the third quarter, and our fans were still there. It was packed, even three deep at the fence in a lot of places.”
Putnam County will continue conference play on the road against Maysville next Friday, while Marceline returns home to face Gallatin.
