MEMPHIS, Mo. - Scotland County made sure Homecoming night belonged to the Tigers from beginning to end, forcing four turnovers and scoring in all four quarters during a 56-0 shutout of the Duchesne Pioneers on Friday night at Tiger Field.
The victory improved Scotland County to 3-1 and provided a fitting finish to a day of Homecoming festivities. Kwayde Hamilton and Ava Remley were crowned Homecoming King and Queen before the game, and Hamilton later added one of the Tigers’ biggest offensive highlights.
Scotland County’s defense set the tone immediately. Brock McDonald intercepted Evan Kundel on Duchesne’s opening possession, but the Pioneers recovered a Tiger fumble near their own goal line to temporarily keep the game scoreless.
Duchesne’s reprieve did not last long. Pressure from the Tigers forced an intentional-grounding penalty in the end zone, resulting in a safety and the first two points of the night.
Scotland County took advantage of the ensuing free kick. Emit Long finished the possession with a six-yard touchdown run before stretching the ball across the goal line on the two-point conversion, giving the Tigers a 10-0 lead with 4:21 remaining in the opening quarter.
Long returned to the end zone early in the second, scoring from five yards out. Cooper Small added the extra point to extend the advantage to 17-0.
The Tigers continued to control the line of scrimmage, and Landon McDonald powered through the Duchesne defense for a 14-yard touchdown. Small’s extra point made it 24-0.
Scotland County then turned to the passing game for one of the night’s biggest plays. Jaden Bergeson used play action to pull the Pioneer defense toward the line before finding Hamilton down the seam. The newly crowned Homecoming King raced the rest of the way for a 59-yard touchdown and a 30-0 Tiger lead.
McDonald delivered another highlight before halftime. The sophomore hurdled the first defender in his path, bounced away from another attempted tackle and completed a 36-yard touchdown run that sent Scotland County into the locker room with a 36-0 advantage.
Long led the first-half ground attack with 99 yards and two touchdowns, while McDonald needed only two carries to collect 50 yards and two scores.
The Tiger defense was equally disruptive. Duchesne struggled throughout the half with high and wide shotgun snaps, allowing Scotland County’s pass rush to repeatedly pressure Kundel. McDonald intercepted two passes before halftime, while Jathan Fuller recovered a fumble to give the Tigers three first-half takeaways.
With the 35-point running clock in effect, Scotland County began mixing younger players into the lineup during the second half. That did little to slow the Tigers.
Aiden Nelson carried the ball near the goal line during Scotland County’s opening possession of the third quarter. When the ball came loose, Chandler Snyder alertly scooped it up and carried it into the end zone. Small converted the extra point to make it 43-0.
Duchesne put together its best scoring opportunity after Landon Richards returned the following kickoff deep into Tiger territory. Scotland County’s defense refused to surrender the shutout, stopping the Pioneers on downs before Quentin Long later added the Tigers’ third interception of the night.
Colin Hatfield pushed the lead to 50-0 early in the fourth quarter, breaking into the open field for a touchdown run. The Tigers closed the scoring when Long, operating at quarterback, connected with Cooper Small for a 45-yard touchdown with 5:11 remaining.
Scotland County finished with four takeaways, including McDonald’s two interceptions, Long’s interception and Fuller’s fumble recovery. The Tigers also overcame two lost fumbles of their own while keeping Duchesne off the scoreboard.
Emit Long finished with 99 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Landon McDonald added 50 yards and two scores on two attempts, while Brock McDonald carried eight times for 46 yards in addition to his two interceptions. Hatfield contributed 35 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and Hamilton added the 59-yard touchdown reception to his Homecoming celebration.
Scotland County will travel to Hamilton, Illinois, next Friday to face West Hancock.
