KEYTESVILLE, Mo. - On a warm Friday night in Keytesville, Schuyler County rediscovered the explosive offense that powered its season-opening victory.
The Rams produced 319 yards of offense and found the end zone seven times, pulling away from the Brunswick-Keytesville-Northwestern Thunder for a 48-22 Central Rivers Conference North victory.
Gage Pauley completed 11 of 16 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns, including three scoring strikes to Mason Oliver. Antonio Wysocki gave Schuyler County balance on the ground, surpassing the century mark with 105 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and moved the Rams to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Neither offense found much room during the opening possessions. Keytesville received the opening kickoff but managed only seven yards on four consecutive rushing attempts. Schuyler County stopped Elijah Sandoval short on fourth down, allowing the Rams to begin their first possession inside Thunder territory.
The opportunity nearly slipped away after Schuyler County faced a fourth-and-six. Pauley rolled away from pressure, planted and lofted a pass toward the end zone. Oliver had worked behind the Keytesville secondary, and the ball dropped into his hands for a 28-yard touchdown and a 6-0 Rams advantage.
Keytesville responded with a big play of its own. Trevin Manson connected with Blake Scott in the flat, and Scott broke away for a 46-yard touchdown. The Thunder added the two-point conversion to take an 8-6 lead with 4:25 remaining in the opening quarter.
It was the first and only time Schuyler County trailed.
The Rams turned to Wysocki on their next scoring opportunity. The junior found a crease in the middle of the defense and raced untouched into the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown. Although the conversion attempt failed, Schuyler County had reclaimed a 12-8 lead with 2:05 left in the first quarter.
The Rams remained aggressive during the second period. A successful fake punt helped extend a drive that eventually reached the Keytesville 15-yard line. Wysocki handled the rest, breaking through the defense for his second touchdown of the night. Schuyler County converted the two-point try to stretch its advantage to 20-8.
Keytesville attempted to produce an answer before halftime, but the Schuyler County defense kept the Thunder from cutting into the lead. That left the Rams with one final opportunity as the clock approached zero.
Rather than allowing the half to end quietly, Pauley dropped back and sent the ball deep downfield. Oliver secured the pass near the 15-yard line, slipped away from two defenders and finished the 56-yard touchdown as the halftime horn sounded.
The dramatic final play of the second quarter gave the Rams their largest lead of the half. Another successful conversion sent Schuyler County into the locker room with a 28-8 advantage and plenty of momentum.
Keytesville showed it was not ready to fold when the teams returned for the second half. Micah Moser broke through the Rams’ defense and raced 41 yards for a touchdown. The Thunder converted the two-point try, trimming Schuyler County’s lead to 28-16 with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter.
The Rams answered before Keytesville could build further momentum. After a sack pushed Schuyler County backward, Pauley went back to the player who had delivered throughout the evening. He found Oliver for a 25-yard touchdown, completing their third scoring connection and extending the lead to 34-16.
Oliver finished with six receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns. His three scoring catches covered 28, 56 and 25 yards as the junior consistently created problems for the Thunder secondary.
Keytesville delivered one more explosive answer on the ensuing kickoff. Emmitt Smith found daylight and raced 65 yards to the end zone, pulling the Thunder within 34-22 with 2:56 left in the third quarter.
The kickoff return gave the home crowd renewed energy, but Schuyler County remained composed. The Rams maintained possession, continued moving the chains and put together a drive that carried into the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.
Facing second-and-goal from the 12-yard line, Pauley handled a low snap and gave Cash Cunningham an opportunity to make a play in the end zone. Cunningham went over a defender to secure the touchdown, and Pauley ran in the conversion to restore a 42-22 lead with 10:37 remaining.
Cunningham finished with four receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown while also handling the Rams’ kickoff duties.
With the offense restoring the 20-point cushion, Schuyler County’s defense took over the closing stretch. The Rams consistently pushed into the Keytesville backfield and prevented the Thunder from mounting another rally.
Danny Priebe recorded a sack before freshman Rylan Cook delivered back-to-back sacks during another fourth-quarter possession. The pressure forced Keytesville into long-yardage situations and helped the Rams regain possession in favorable field position.
Schuyler County put the game away with 5:31 remaining. Wysocki powered across the goal line from six yards out for his third rushing touchdown, completing the hat trick and extending the Rams’ lead to 48-22.
Pauley and the offense finished the night in victory formation, allowing the final seconds to tick away on Schuyler County’s first conference win of the season.
The Rams finished with 211 passing yards and 108 rushing yards while holding Keytesville to 165 yards of total offense. Schuyler County also avoided throwing an interception and recovered two Thunder fumbles.
Manson completed six of 11 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown for Keytesville. Moser led the Thunder’s rushing attack with 51 yards and a score, while Scott’s 46-yard touchdown reception and Smith’s 65-yard kickoff return accounted for the remainder of Keytesville’s scoring.
After Keytesville twice threatened to make the game interesting during the third quarter, Schuyler County answered both times and closed the contest with 14 unanswered points. The result gave the Rams a much-needed road victory and another glimpse of how dangerous their offense can be when the passing and rushing attacks are working together.
