UNIONVILLE, Mo. - Rory Gilworth came within one defensive play of perfection Monday evening, striking out 14 batters and throwing a complete-game no-hitter as Putnam County defeated Scotland County 4-0 at Max Mothersbaugh Field.
Gilworth did not allow a hit or issue a walk while facing only 22 batters, one above the minimum. Scotland County’s lone baserunner reached on an error during the seventh inning, ending Gilworth’s perfect-game bid but not preventing the junior from completing one of the strongest pitching performances of the season.
Putnam County improved to 4-4 with the victory, while Scotland County moved to 3-3.
Heavy rain overnight and during the morning left the neighboring junior high field unplayable, but extensive work and a steady wind helped prepare the varsity diamond for the game. Once play began, Gilworth immediately established control inside the circle.
Makenna Musgrove fouled off two pitches during the opening plate appearance before Gilworth caught her looking at the knees. Allie Elenbaas followed with a swinging strikeout, and Gilworth froze Maty Buford with another pitch at the knees to strike out the side.
Putnam County provided its pitcher with an early lead during the bottom of the first. After Bela Lopez grounded out, Gilworth drove the first pitch she saw inside the third-base line for a single and then stole second.
Reagan Smith sent a ground ball toward first base, but a fielding error allowed her to reach and Gilworth to continue around third and score. Bryna Hurley was hit by a pitch before Smith and courtesy runner Oaklee Roberts executed a double steal.
Charli Ingersoll then grounded out to shortstop, allowing Smith to score and extending Putnam County’s advantage to 2-0.
Gilworth continued overpowering Scotland County during the second. She struck out Elle Hamlin before retiring Kenzington Miller on a ground ball back to the circle. Ailea Hayes then swung through a rise ball, giving Gilworth five strikeouts through two innings.
The junior was even sharper in the third. Gilworth struck out Hilary Hamm, Lexi Weber and Ali Ward in succession, reaching eight strikeouts against the first nine batters she faced.
Scotland County never found a way to solve the combination of Gilworth’s rise ball, drop ball and changing speeds. The Lady Tigers put more balls in play as the game continued, but Putnam County’s defense handled each opportunity through the first six innings.
Musgrove, meanwhile, prevented the Lady Midgets from building a comfortable lead. The sophomore retired Putnam County in order during both the second and third innings, repeatedly producing ground balls and giving Scotland County an opportunity to remain within striking distance.
Putnam County finally added another run during the fourth. Ingersoll singled into center field and Ava Perkins reached on an error, placing runners at first and second with nobody out. Gracie Tennill was hit by a pitch one batter later to load the bases.
Musgrove responded by fielding Riley Jones’ ground ball and throwing home for a force out, temporarily keeping the deficit at two. A passed ball later allowed Perkins to score before Musgrove escaped the inning with Putnam County leading 3-0.
The Lady Midgets added their final run in the fifth. Gilworth reached on a throwing error and advanced to second before Smith’s groundout moved her to third. Hurley followed with a ground ball to second, bringing Gilworth home for a 4-0 advantage.
All four Putnam County runs were unearned against Musgrove, who allowed only two hits over six innings. She walked one, struck out two and threw 47 of her 68 pitches for strikes.
“I thought McKenna did great,” Scotland County head coach Abby Haire said during the Hometown Radio Sports Network postgame show. “She’s somebody that I rely on a lot, and I appreciate that she understands that she’s not going to get double-digit strikeouts every night.”
Haire also praised the work of her middle infield and said the Lady Tigers must learn to limit the damage after making an error instead of attempting a difficult follow-up play that allows runners to advance.
Gilworth carried a perfect game into the seventh after retiring all 18 batters she faced through six innings. She had struck out 14 of those 18, including the side twice, and needed only three more outs to complete the rare achievement.
Musgrove opened the final inning with a line drive, but Perkins reacted quickly at third base and secured it for the first out. Elenbaas then lifted a pop-up near the circle. Gilworth attempted to make the catch herself, but the ball fell from her glove and Elenbaas reached on the error.
The miscue ended the perfect-game bid, although the no-hitter remained intact. Gilworth quickly regained her composure as Buford popped out to Lopez at shortstop. Hamlin then grounded to Lopez, who threw across to Jones at first for the final out.
Gilworth finished the night with 87 pitches, including 58 strikes. She also recorded one of Putnam County’s two hits and scored twice. Ingersoll supplied the Lady Midgets’ other hit and drove in a run, while Hurley also collected an RBI.
Putnam County head coach Sara Webb said Gilworth established command from the beginning and consistently worked ahead of Scotland County’s hitters.
“She showed command in the circle, jumped ahead on batters, and that’s all we can ask from her,” Webb said. “I think this confidence win will hopefully help us moving forward.”
Putnam County travels to Brookfield for a Grand River Conference game Wednesday before hosting Maysville on Thursday. Scotland County returns home to face Knox County on Wednesday and will compete in the North Shelby Tournament on Saturday.
