MOKANE, Mo. - Scotland County found an early answer and continued battling behind a strong night from Emitt Long, but South Callaway’s precise option attack proved difficult to slow Friday night.
Long rushed for 191 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries as the Tigers stepped up against a Class 2 opponent, but the Bulldogs scored 35 consecutive points after Scotland County pulled within two and earned a 49-13 victory at South Callaway High School.
The loss was Scotland County’s first of the season, moving the Tigers to 2-1. South Callaway also improved to 2-1 with its second consecutive victory.
Scotland County attempted to create an immediate opportunity with an angled onside kick to begin the game. The ball traveled through the first line of South Callaway’s return unit, but the Bulldogs narrowly recovered and began their opening possession near midfield.
South Callaway quickly introduced the challenge Scotland County would face throughout the night. Operating from a tightly packed double-wing formation, quarterback Aiden Jenkins repeatedly placed the football into a running back’s midsection before deciding whether to complete the handoff or keep it himself.
Jenkins completed the opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run at the 10:02 mark. Ethan Munford added the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.
Scotland County showed immediately that it could move the football. Jaden Bergeson connected with Cohen Small for a long completion, but Hudson Jones intercepted the next pass and returned possession to South Callaway.
Small answered for the Tigers on the following possession. The senior stepped in front of a Jenkins pass for an interception, giving Scotland County the football back and preventing the Bulldogs from capitalizing on the turnover.
Long made the takeaway count on the very next play. He found an opening at the line of scrimmage, broke into the secondary and raced to the end zone for Scotland County’s first touchdown. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but the sudden exchange of interceptions and Long’s scoring run pulled the Tigers within 8-6 with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter.
South Callaway responded by returning to its option attack. Jenkins directed another scoring drive and finished it with a seven-yard keeper before Stephen Thomure converted the two-point attempt, stretching the Bulldogs’ advantage to 16-6 with 4:32 left in the opening period.
Scotland County continued finding success behind Long and senior Brock McDonald, but penalties and turnovers made it difficult for the Tigers to maintain their early momentum. Long consistently reached the second level when Scotland County created room along the edge, while McDonald supplied physical carries between the tackles.
The Bulldogs began creating separation early in the second quarter. Jenkins again used the run-pass option to hide the football and force Scotland County’s defenders to commit before revealing his decision. The senior pulled the ball from the mesh point and broke loose for his third touchdown of the half.
Jackson Campbell completed the two-point conversion, giving South Callaway a 24-6 lead with 10:54 remaining before halftime.
Scotland County attempted to change the direction of the game with a fake punt later in the quarter. McDonald took the direct snap and fought toward the line to gain, but Munford helped stop him short and gave the Bulldogs possession on downs.
The Tigers’ defense prevented South Callaway from immediately turning the favorable field position into points. Jenkins later appeared to break free for another touchdown, but a blindside-block penalty erased the score and moved the Bulldogs backward.
South Callaway still managed to add one more explosive play before halftime. Eli Hutchison took a handoff, found room along the left side and sprinted 57 yards for a touchdown with 1:54 remaining. The extra-point attempt missed, sending the Bulldogs into the locker room with a 30-6 advantage.
Although Scotland County entered halftime facing a four-score deficit, Long had already rushed for more than 100 yards. The Tigers produced several successful possessions during the opening two quarters but were unable to finish enough of them with points.
Scotland County returned from halftime with one of its most methodical possessions of the night. Long gained 10 and 11 yards on consecutive carries before powering through contact for another first down in South Callaway territory.
Bergeson contributed two first-down runs, and McDonald continued moving the pile as the Tigers advanced inside the Bulldogs’ 25-yard line. The possession demonstrated the success Scotland County could create when it remained ahead of the chains.
The drive ended without points after Bergeson rolled to his right and attempted to connect with Kwayde Hamilton. The pass deflected from the receiver’s hands and was intercepted by Hutchison at the South Callaway 14-yard line.
The Bulldogs added two touchdowns later in the third quarter to extend their advantage. Hutchison supplied the final score of the period when he took a wing handoff from the South Callaway 21-yard line and broke into the open field.
Hutchison raced down the sideline for a 79-yard touchdown with 43 seconds remaining. Garrett Wright converted the extra point to make the score 43-6 and initiate the running clock.
Scotland County continued competing into the fourth quarter and put together another sustained drive against South Callaway’s starting defense. Bergeson found Small near midfield to begin the period before Long and McDonald combined to move the Tigers deeper into Bulldogs territory.
The drive appeared in danger of ending when Scotland County faced fourth-and-nine. Bergeson faked the handoff, rolled to his left and delivered a pass downfield to Small, who made the catch near the South Callaway three-yard line.
Landon McDonald finished the possession with a three-yard touchdown run. Cooper Small sent the extra point directly through the uprights, cutting the margin to 43-13 with six minutes remaining and temporarily stopping the running clock.
Both teams began substituting heavily after the touchdown. South Callaway’s younger group added the final score when Andrew Niemet broke a long run to set up first-and-goal. Freshman Chase Priest reached the end zone on a short carry with 2:35 remaining, while Scotland County deflected the ensuing extra-point attempt.
The Tigers’ younger players continued moving the football during the final possession. Easton Barron broke free for a long run into South Callaway territory before time expired with the Bulldogs holding a 49-13 advantage.
Long’s 191 rushing yards led a Scotland County offense that accumulated 396 total yards and 15 first downs. McDonald added 58 yards on 14 carries, while Barron gained 29 yards on two late attempts.
Bergeson completed 8 of 14 passes for 110 yards. Small caught four passes for 83 yards, including the fourth-down reception that set up Scotland County’s second touchdown. Long added two receptions for 18 yards, while Hamilton caught two passes for nine yards.
Scotland County finished with 286 rushing yards on 50 attempts. Landon McDonald carried five times for seven yards and a touchdown, Aiden Nelson gained four yards on five attempts and Small added two yards on his only carry.
South Callaway relied almost entirely on its rushing attack. According to the Hometown Radio Sports Network’s postgame totals, Hutchison accumulated 171 yards on five carries, Jenkins rushed seven times for 124 yards and Munford added 95 yards on 10 attempts.
Scotland County committed eight penalties for 55 yards and threw two interceptions. South Callaway was penalized twice for 25 yards and finished with 12 first downs.
The Tigers will return to Memphis next Friday for their homecoming game against Duchesne, while South Callaway remains home to face Montgomery County.
