SHELBINA, Mo. - South Shelby entered Thursday night searching for its first victory of the season. One inning was all the Lady Birds needed to take complete control.
South Shelby sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning, building an early advantage that carried the Lady Birds to a 14-0 victory over Marion County in five innings. Kinley Maddex completed a two-hit shutout in the circle as South Shelby improved to 1-3, while Marion County fell to 1-5 in the opening game of a Shelby County doubleheader.
Maddex began the evening by retiring the Lady Mustangs in order, needing only nine pitches to work through the top of the first. South Shelby’s offense then combined timely hits with patience at the plate to create a lengthy opening-inning rally.
Janna Livers started the bottom half with a single to short and quickly stole second. Gracynn Lanpher was hit by a pitch before Ava Eleazarraraz singled into right-center field, loading the bases with nobody out.
Reese Maupin battled through a nine-pitch plate appearance before drawing a full-count walk to bring Livers home with the first run. Lanpher scored moments later when a pitch reached the backstop and the ensuing throw toward the plate got away.
Another throwing error allowed Eleazarraraz to score before walks and hit batters continued placing runners aboard. Allie Wharton drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Maupin, stretching the lead to 4-0.
Avery Gough supplied the next hit from the bottom of the lineup, lining an RBI single into left field to score Myra McWilliams. Livers then came to the plate for the second time in the inning and delivered another single, bringing home Serenity Rutherford and Wharton to make it 7-0.
Lanpher was hit by a pitch for the second time in the frame before Maupin and Maddex drew consecutive bases-loaded walks. McWilliams followed with another walk to force home the inning’s final run.
By the time Marion County recorded the third out, South Shelby had scored 10 times on four hits. The Lady Birds drew six walks and were hit by two pitches during the inning, with eight different players crossing the plate.
Marion County turned to Kayla Smith in relief during the first before bringing Anna Luckett into the circle in the second. Smith entered with the bases loaded and recorded the final out of the opening inning, but South Shelby added three more runs in its next trip to the plate.
Wharton and Gough opened the second with consecutive walks before Livers reached to load the bases. Lanpher drew another free pass to score Wharton, and Eleazarraraz walked to bring Gough home for a 12-0 advantage.
Luckett entered with one out and immediately began attacking the strike zone. The sophomore induced a ground ball from Maupin, allowing Marion County to record a force out at the plate, before Maddex lifted a sacrifice fly into shallow center field to score Lanpher.
The change in the circle helped Marion County settle into the game. Luckett retired South Shelby without a run in the third, working around an error with two groundouts and a fly ball to left field.
While Luckett slowed the Lady Birds’ offense, Maddex continued moving rapidly through the Marion County lineup. Aspen Cheney drew a walk and advanced to third in the second inning, but the Lady Mustangs were unable to bring her home. Maddex then worked a perfect third inning and carried a no-hitter into the fourth.
Jada Worrell ended the no-hit bid by lining a one-out single through the middle. Kaleigh Schaefer followed with a ground ball that moved Worrell into scoring position, but Gough fielded the next opportunity at second and threw to McWilliams at first to end the inning.
South Shelby scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth. Eleazarraraz reached on a walk before Maupin singled into center field. Marion County attempted to catch Maupin during a rundown between first and second, but an errant throw allowed Eleazarraraz to score from third and extend the margin to 14-0.
Luckett prevented the game from ending in the fourth by striking out Jaylen Snider with Maupin standing in scoring position. She allowed only one hit and one run across three innings of relief after South Shelby had scored 13 times during the first two frames.
Marion County entered the fifth needing five runs to extend the contest. Maddex retired Cheney and Luckett on consecutive groundouts before Alyssa Byers, who had entered defensively earlier in the game, lined a two-out single between shortstop and third base.
The Lady Mustangs’ second hit kept the game alive momentarily, but Maddex responded by striking out Desirea Boden to complete the shutout.
Maddex allowed two hits and one walk while striking out two across five innings. She was especially efficient throughout the evening, throwing only 38 pitches through the first 4? innings and relying on South Shelby’s defense to record most of its outs through routine ground balls and fly balls.
Livers and Gough led the Lady Birds with two hits apiece. Livers drove home two runs, scored twice and stole a base, while Gough added an RBI and scored two runs from the ninth spot in the order. Maupin reached safely in all three of her plate appearances, finishing with a single, two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Worrell and Byers recorded Marion County’s two hits. Luckett provided the Lady Mustangs with their strongest stretch in the circle, allowing one run on one hit over three innings while walking two and striking out one.
South Shelby will return to action Tuesday at La Plata, while Marion County is scheduled to host Wellsville-Middletown.
