HARRISBURG, Mo. - For nearly three quarters, Clark County found itself trapped in a scoreless defensive struggle. Once the Indians finally broke through, the complexion of the game changed in a hurry.
Lukas Weaver caught two touchdown passes and intercepted a pass during a decisive third-quarter stretch as Clark County scored 37 unanswered points in the final 18 minutes to defeat Harrisburg 37-0 Friday night. The Indians improved to 1-1 after overcoming a first half filled with stalled possessions, penalties and difficult field position.
Neither offense generated much rhythm during a scoreless opening half played in sweltering conditions. Clark County struggled to establish its running game, while Harrisburg leaned primarily on the legs of quarterback Kadyn Weldon and running back Hunter Winscott.
The Indians’ defense repeatedly prevented those carries from developing into sustained possessions. Dallas Davis created penetration against the Harrisburg rushing attack, while Reid Sammons helped Clark County control field position with multiple punts that pinned the Bulldogs deep in their own territory.
Harrisburg produced one of the half’s more promising possessions behind Weldon, but Clark County stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down near the Indians’ 30-yard line. Clark County later moved into Harrisburg territory during the closing minutes, with Weaver providing a key reception, but the Bulldogs answered with a fourth-down stop of their own.
The teams entered halftime tied at zero, with Harrisburg holding only 41 rushing yards and Clark County sitting at minus-10 on the ground.
Clark County finally found its answer through the air midway through the third quarter. Bennett Plenge connected with Grady Webster for a 20-yard gain before finding Weaver for a 22-yard touchdown with 6:19 remaining. Harrisburg intercepted the ensuing conversion attempt, but the completion had given the Indians their first lead at 6-0.
Weaver changed the game again on Harrisburg’s next possession. The senior stepped in front of a Weldon pass for an interception, giving Clark County favorable field position and an immediate opportunity to build upon its momentum.
Gabe Tournear took advantage on his first carry of the night. He broke through the defense and scored from 19 yards out, while Webster connected with Sammons for the two-point conversion to extend the advantage to 14-0 with 2:48 left in the quarter.
The Indians needed only one play to strike again following another defensive stop. Plenge found Weaver down the sideline, and Weaver raced away from the Harrisburg defense to complete a 61-yard touchdown with six seconds remaining. Luke Scott converted the extra point, sending Clark County into the fourth quarter with a 21-0 lead.
After producing little on the ground during the opening half, Clark County began finding room behind Landon Roberts. The junior helped the Indians move methodically into Harrisburg territory before Tournear finished the possession with a 17-yard touchdown run.
Tournear had touched the ball only twice, but both carries ended in the end zone. Scott’s extra-point attempt struck the bottom of the upright, leaving Clark County ahead 27-0 with 10:38 remaining.
Harrisburg continued competing despite its limited depth and the loss of Winscott to an apparent second-half injury. The Bulldogs stopped Clark County on fourth down near the goal line later in the quarter, but the resulting field position kept them pinned against their own end zone.
A holding penalty pushed Harrisburg backward before a punt snap went out of the end zone for a safety, increasing Clark County’s lead to 29-0 with 4:18 remaining.
The Indians’ younger players supplied the final points. Treyyin Hammer took a quarterback keeper through the left side and scored on a 29-yard run, then connected with Isaiah Kiger for the two-point conversion and the final 37-0 margin.
Plenge completed 11 of 18 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Weaver caught five passes for 126 yards and both scores while also recording the interception that helped turn a six-point game into a two-score advantage.
Roberts led Clark County’s ground game with 33 yards on 11 carries, while Sammons added 31 yards on four attempts. Tournear finished with 36 yards and two touchdowns on his two carries, and Cash Wilson caught three passes for 33 yards.
Weldon accounted for most of Harrisburg’s offense, rushing 12 times for 46 yards while completing two passes for 12 yards. Winscott carried 14 times for 26 yards and caught two passes for 12 yards before leaving the game.
Clark County’s defense preserved the shutout while recording multiple sacks and forcing two turnovers. Dallas Davis recovered a Harrisburg fumble, while Isaiah Washburn and Corbin White were among the Indians who reached the quarterback.
The victory gave Clark County its first win of the season following an opening-week loss to Bowling Green. The Indians will return to action next Friday at Palmyra.
