MEMPHIS, Mo. - Scotland County forced eight turnovers and held off a fourth-quarter rally by Putnam County to open the football season with a 14-8 victory Friday night at Tiger Field.
The Tigers carried a 14-0 lead into halftime after quarterback Jaden Bergeson accounted for two second-quarter touchdowns. Putnam County scored eight unanswered points early in the fourth, but Emit Long intercepted a pass with 10 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Turnovers shaped the game from its opening snap. Cooper Small intercepted Putnam County quarterback Sawyer Morgan on the first play from scrimmage, giving Scotland County an immediate scoring opportunity. The Tigers came away empty after missing a 35-yard field goal, but their defense continued creating problems for the Midgets throughout the half.
Scotland County broke the scoreless tie with 5:08 remaining in the second quarter. Bergeson connected with Kwayde Hamilton for a 12-yard touchdown pass, giving the Tigers a 6-0 advantage after the extra-point attempt failed.
Denny Black recovered a Putnam County fumble at the Midgets’ 28-yard line late in the half, and Scotland County turned the short field into another touchdown. Bergeson scored on a short run with 16 seconds remaining before finding Cohen Small for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 halftime lead.
The Tigers preserved that advantage through the third quarter. Brock McDonald extended one Scotland County possession by running for a first down on a fake punt, while Jacob Stott intercepted Morgan later in the period. Putnam County recovered a Scotland County fumble on the ensuing play, preventing the Tigers from adding to their lead.
Putnam County began its comeback early in the fourth quarter. Seth Hannink helped power a long drive before Morgan scored on a 2-yard run. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Scotland County ahead 14-6.
Only seconds later, a high snap sailed over McDonald’s head and out of the end zone on a punt attempt. The safety pulled the Midgets within 14-8 and returned possession to Putnam County.
Scotland County recovered a muffed punt to halt one Putnam County opportunity, but the Midgets received another chance when Jacob Jones intercepted McDonald late in the game.
Putnam County advanced toward midfield on its final possession before Long made a leaping interception with 10 seconds remaining. Scotland County took a knee to finish the victory.
The Tigers’ defense collected eight takeaways, including three interceptions and five fumble recoveries. Small, Stott and Long each recorded an interception, while Stott also contributed a defensive fumble recovery.
Bergeson delivered the decisive plays in his first start of the season, accounting for both Scotland County touchdowns. He broke the scoreless tie with his 12-yard strike to Hamilton, scored on the ground late in the half and completed the two-point pass to Small that ultimately provided the winning margin. Bergeson also made an impact defensively with a sack as part of the Tigers’ disruptive performance.
McDonald led Scotland County’s rushing attack with 88 yards on 17 carries, while Long added 78 yards on 21 attempts. Together with Bergeson’s command of the offense, the Tigers did enough with their opportunities to build a two-score lead and withstand Putnam County’s late charge.
Hannink led all rushers with 116 yards on 10 carries for Putnam County. C. Campbell-Johnson caught four passes for 17 yards and carried seven times for 21 yards. Rayden Chapman added three receptions for 37 yards.
Scotland County improved to 1-0 and will remain home to face Highland next Friday. Putnam County fell to 0-1 and will travel to Milan.
