QUEEN CITY, Mo. - Schuyler County quarterback Gage Pauley threw eight touchdown passes as the Rams survived a furious second-half comeback by Polo to claim a 58-50 victory in Friday night’s season opener.
Schuyler County carried a commanding 28-8 advantage into halftime, but Polo erupted for 36 points during a wild third quarter and briefly moved in front. The Rams answered with two touchdowns in the fourth and made a late defensive stand to secure the win.
Pauley completed 20 of 24 passes for 361 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. His touchdown total was believed to be an unofficial single-game school record.
Freshman Rylan Cook made an immediate impact in his varsity debut, catching six passes for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Cash Cunningham also hauled in three scoring passes, while Mason Oliver led the Rams with six receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown.
Schuyler County opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Pauley connected with Cook for a 4-yard touchdown. Pauley then found Drake Macomber for the two-point conversion, giving the Rams an 8-0 lead.
Polo appeared to have an answer on a 49-yard touchdown run by Walker Kelly, but the play was erased by a facemask penalty. The Panthers later advanced into the red zone before Schuyler County stopped them on downs.
Pauley threw three more touchdowns in the second quarter. Antonio Wysocki caught a 19-yard scoring pass, Cook broke free for a 59-yard touchdown and Cunningham scored on an 8-yard reception with three seconds remaining before halftime.
Polo’s lone touchdown of the opening half came on a 9-yard run by Kelly.
The complexion of the game changed dramatically after halftime.
Cunningham caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Pauley to extend Schuyler County’s lead to 34-8, but Polo responded with three touchdowns in less than three minutes. Sam Horner scored on a 4-yard run, Whit Balden returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown and Kelly broke loose for a 26-yard score.
Pauley temporarily slowed the Panthers’ surge with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Oliver, putting the Rams ahead 42-30.
Polo continued charging back. Drew Moore raced 71 yards for a touchdown, and Kelly followed with a 64-yard scoring run that gave the Panthers their first lead, 44-42, with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter.
Schuyler County reclaimed the advantage just eight seconds into the fourth when Pauley found Cunningham for a 13-yard touchdown. The ensuing two-point conversion put the Rams ahead 50-44.
Kelly answered with a 12-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 50 with 10:02 remaining. He finished with 252 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries.
The Rams delivered the final scoring blow when Pauley connected with Cook for a 3-yard touchdown with 7:50 left. Schuyler County converted the two-point attempt to establish the final eight-point margin.
Polo threatened again late in the fourth, but the Rams stopped the Panthers on fourth-and-4 at the Schuyler County 17-yard line with 2:04 remaining.
The Panthers received one final opportunity after a Schuyler County punt, taking possession at the Rams’ 38-yard line with 19 seconds left. A penalty and a series of incomplete passes ended Polo’s comeback attempt as time expired.
Oliver’s 183 receiving yards led Schuyler County, while Cunningham finished with five catches for 47 yards and three touchdowns. Wysocki caught two passes for 26 yards and a score, and Noah Brown led the Rams’ rushing attack with 44 yards on three carries.
Moore added 105 yards and a touchdown on nine carries for Polo, which was playing its first official game as an eight-player football program. Horner recorded 61 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts, while Balden contributed 60 rushing yards in addition to his defensive score.
Schuyler County begins the season 1-0 and will travel to face Bishop LeBlond in St. Joseph next Friday.
